More Information...

Short Description:
The AP-Petside.com Poll is an annual survey of people with companion animals. It asks questions about where companion animals were obtained, attitudes about adoption, number of companions in the household, and personal experience at shelters, among other questions.

Abstract:
Study Highlights:
  • 77% of respondents live with one or more dogs, while 43% live with one or more cats.
  • 31% of respondents bought at least one animal from a breeder, while another 30% adopted at least one animal from a shelter.
  • Of those respondents who did not currently have any pets adopted from a shelter, 32% had, at some time in the past, adopted an animal from a shelter.
  • Of those who currently had an animal adopted from a shelter, 58% felt that it being "more socially responsible to adopt a pet from a shelter" was a very important reason for their decision.
  • 23% of respondents had brought an animal to a shelter in the past. Of those, about one third brought in their own animal.
