The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) conducted a survey of veterinarians regarding their knowledge of and attitudes toward non-veterinarians providing services to animals. Most responding veterinarians were aware of such instances, with the most frequently reported services provided being chiropractic and anesthesia-free dental cleanings.

Study Highlights:
  • 88% of of respondents were aware of acts that they consider to be illegal when performed by a non-licensed vet.
  • 35% of respondents reported knowledge of lay people administering vaccinations.
  • For those who work with horses, 82% say the most common illegal treatments for horses are chiropractic treatments and teeth floating.
  • For those who work with animals who are raised to be slaughtered for food, 93% were aware of pregnancy checks being performed by lay people and 36% reported knowledge of illegal embryo transfers.
  • 38% of vets reported providing follow-up care for animals receiving medical care from non-veterinarians.
