Study Shows 7.3 Million Americans are Vegetarians

According to the "Vegetarianism in America study by Vegetarian Times Magazine, 3.2% of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian-based diet. Approximately 0.5%, or 1 million adults, are vegans, who consume no animal products at all. In addition, 10% of U.S. adults, or 22.8 million people, say they largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet. Data on age, gender, and other demographics were also included.

Hogs and Pigs (Economics, Statistics and Market Information System)

This quarterly report issued by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service presents data on U.S. pig production for 17 major states and the U.S. The statistics include inventory of pigs by class, weight group, and value of hogs and pigs, farrowings, farrowing intentions. The number of operations keeping hogs, the number of hog operations and percent of inventory by size groups are also tabulated. Reports are available from June 1968 to present.

Nielsen: U.S. Consumers Making Fewer Shopping Trips

According to this research, U.S. consumers have reduced shopping frequency in an effort to combine errands because of rising gas prices and other economic pressures. This trend has implications for where people do their food shopping.

Counting the Contributions: Benchmarking for Your Organization and Your State

Shelter statistics show that 13.5 million dogs and cats were euthanized in shelters in 1973, compared with 3-4 million in 2007. Tax and financial data on individual nonprofits and state population totals were used to calculate a per-capita donation figure, used here as benchmarks to assess the level of support for animal protection in each state.

Livestock Slaughter - 2007 Summary

This U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report provides 2007 statistics for U.S. meat production and farmed animal slaughter ("red meat" animals only). The USDA estimates total red meat production (including beef, pork, lamb, etc.) was nearly 49 billion pounds in 2007, an all-time high.
